Chapter 3, The Biosphere, Section 4: The Cycles of Matter

Matter is neither created nor destroyed. Matter moves through living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem in a continuous process called a cycle.  (Matter in an ecosystem may change form, but it never leaves the ecosystem.)

Select any ONE of the Cycles of Matter (Water, Carbon, Oxygen-Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus) and describe in 4-5 complete sentences or less why the cycle you picked is important to the abiotic and biotic parts of an ecosystem. You are welcome to include photos, images and diagrams or flow charts within your comment in addition to your statements.

I choose carbon . carbon is important to the abiotic and biotic parts of an ecosystem because of Respiration, after respriation comes the travels to the biotic part of the biosphere.

  2. I chose to do the carbon-oxygen cycle because both substances are used daily and are important for everyday life. Oxygen is the second most abundant gas on Earth in the Earth's atmosphere and is used directly from the atmosphere by most plants and animals. It is also necessary for combustion of fuels and many other chemical and biological reactions on Earth. Carbon dioxide is an important raw material used by plants in the process of photosynthesis. It is used in a natural cycle where carbon dioxide is used by plants and given off by animals and oxygen is used by animals and given off by plants. Carbon dioxide is given off by decaying matter and oxygen from photosynthesis is used by animals.

  3. I choose the water cycle. Without water biotic factors wouldn't be able to survive or function properly. Some biotic factors that need water are humans, plants, animals, almost everything that's living needs water. And some abiotic factors that help with the water cycle, and that allows water to move around is heat.

  4. I choose carbon-oxygen, because it is essential to every-day life, literally. Oxygen is needed for humans and other organisms to survive on Earth. Carbon dioxide is used when plants start the process of photosynthesis, which is very important. Plants receiving carbon dioxide matters, because they give off the oxygen we need and we pay them in return by giving off the carbon dioxide they need to survive. Carbon-oxygen literally enables us to live in this world because without oxygen or carbon, not many organisms would be able to survive.

  5. I choose the water cycle. Why? Well the water cycle gives plants water and helps them grow. Which then gives us some type of food for us to eat. It also gives us water for us to drink, because our bodies are about 60%.

  6. I choose the water cycle. I picked it because it recycles water. It is a essential tool for all life. It is a good abiotic factor because it provides life to all living things. D'Youville

  7. Although the other cycles are important, the water cycle is the most important. The water cycle recycles the water on the Earth. It's important for biotic organisms because it provides us with water and keeps us alive and hydrated. Abiotic factors, such as heat, help with the movement of water.

  8. I choose the Nitrogen Cycle. I chose this cycle because it is the one that no one really knows of. This cycle contains underwater life and how they care for themselves. As it moves from food all the way to plants and algae and back again, it creates food and clean environment for the fish to live in.

  9. I say the water cycle because if we didn't have it, there wouldn't be life on this planet. The water cycle is important in everyday life. We all need water to live and survive also plants grow from this cycle which keeps us alive.

  10. I chose the the phosphorus cycle because not a lot of people wrote about it. The phosphorous cycle tracks the movement of phosphorous through the Earth's crust, the Earth's surface, and the ocean. Usually phosphorus exists as a solid metal so it is not typically found in the atmosphere. Plants need phosphorus to grow, however a lot of phosphorus is permanently lost due to runoff water.

  11. The carbon cycle is very essential to life on Earth. The carbon cycle makes sure the Earth has an equal balance of Carbon in the atmosphere (not too much or not too little). This keeps the Earth warm enough for us to live. Therefore, without the carbon cycle, Earth would be frozen and life would not be able to exist. This cycle also involves aboiotic factors in the process to keep the cycle moving. This cycle definitely involves biotic factors. Recently, humans have caused the carbon cycle to not function as efficiently as it used to. This is because of overproduction and pollution. Due to this human activity, the amount of carbon on earth is increasing and the Earth is becoming warmer than it should be (which affects abiotic factors such as glaciers, tundra, etc.). In conclusion, the carbon cycle (joining forces with the other cycles) makes life possible.

  12. Carbon is involved with everything. Carbon is the most important thing on Earth. Without Carbon, life on Earth
would not exist. This is why the Carbon-Cycle is most associated with biotic factors than abiotic factors because it mostly deals with living things than nonliving things. Carbon is in many forms including charcoal, coal, and pencils. This is
basically the main part on why carbon makes Earth considered living.

  13. I chose the phosphorus cycle. I think this is important because its important for the production of ATP and nucleotides. I also think its important because when regular organisms die the phosphorus is released by bacteria which is a decomposer. Phosphorus can be found in soil or water.

I chose the "Carbon Cycle" because it is one of the most important cycles! This includes the process of living and non-living things breathing. We get oxygen form plants through photosynthesis and they get carbon dioxide form the air we breath out called respiration.

  15. I chose the Water Cycle because it is the most important cycle, so i think. The water cycle is important because it ensure the availability of water for all living things. 95% of our world is water but most of it is either frozen or underground. And also purifies water ready for reuse distributes allows growth of water dependent species. Well all the water in the world would would be really bad if the water cycle ended and think of all the extras like hydro electric, and other pluses to the water cycle.

I choose the Carbon Cycle because it's one of many important cycles. Without Carbon, life on Earth wouldn't exist. Therefore, Carbon plays a major role in our everyday lives. It deals with living and non-living things, so they are important to biotic and abiotic factors. We get oxygen from plants through something called photosynthesis. 18. I chose water cycle because at each resivoir, it is helping biotic and abiotic organisms in the ecosystem. It helps to provide energy for producers to function which allows the ecosystem and food chains to move naturally.

  19. I chose the Carbon Cycle because it is one of the important cycles that we need to be able to live. The carbon cycle is very useful in our lives, and the lives of the biotic and abiotic factors. We need air to breathe, so if the carbon cycle didn't exist today then we wouldn't be alive right now. The carbon goes to the plants and in return the plants give us carbon-dioxide.

  20. Although all cycles are all equally important in its own ways, the carbon cycle plays a big role, literally a BIG role. The carbon cycle is the reason why there is life on Earth. Carbon helps Earth in order to stay warm and to keep humans living at a good temperature. Humans on the other hand are making Earth a whole lot more warmer than it was. Us as humans also play a part in the carbon cycle because we keep adding more carbon onto Earth than what there should be.

  21. Out of all the cycles, to me the most important cycle is the carbon cycle because all living organisms in the earth need carbon in order to live, grow, and reproduce.Without it it will be a disaster.

  22. Although all the cycles of matter are important, I would choose the Oxygen-Carbon out of all the others because all organisms need either oxygen, carbon, or both to live.

  23. I chose the water cycle because it's the most important component of any ecosystem. We need water because all living organisms need it to live, grow, and survive in our community. For example, Animals need water because they have to energize theirselves to hunt successfully to get the nutrients they need in their body to capture other animals for their survival guide. Humans definitely need water so their body can be full of nutrients, and so the water can help their body grow and survive.

  24. Although all the other cycles are of equal importance, the water cycle has a bigger role for organisms. All living things need water to survive. The human body contains mostly of water. The water cycle helps all organisms get water for there personal needs. \Without the water cycle who is going to help all those thirsty people out there?

  25. The cycle I choose is the Water Cycle. This cycle is important to the abiotic factors because non-living things that we create are made from water and we use them in our daily lives. This cycle is important to the biotic factors because living things (organisms) use water throughout their daily lives to survive whether that be eating, drinking, or for energy for your body. These two factors work together to form and help produce the Water Cycle.

  28. I choose the water cycle because that cycle involves water, In latin vita sounds like aguita in spanish and in spanish it means water and in latin it means life. We (living organisms) would not be able to survive with out water, therefore i choose water.

I say that the water cycle is the one I can clearly understand and know what is going on. The process of evaporation from the water into the clouds and it turns into precipitation and the process goes on and on again.

The most important cycle for me is the Water Cycle. Without water, nothing on this Earth can live! All living organisms need water in order to survive and reproduce. The water cycle helps refresh the Earth ( shower ) and give us water to drink.

I think that the water cycle is more important for bioctic and abiotic factors. Water has H2O, which means it has some oxygen in it. This helps bioctic factors because we need it to survive. We use water daily for example we use to make things, and water contributes to our health. It is important for abioctic factors because soil helps living things grow and the soil needs water to make it happen.

Please exuse me for my late post but I am not happy that you will deduct 10 points but a 90 is better than a 0.

In my case I believe that the water cycle is the most important. I say this because abiotic and biotic organisms all need water living or not. Not only is water for hydration but in some cases water is also used for energy in some organisms, Water also know as H2O which means hydrogen and oxygen and what does everything in the world need OXYGEN! Oxygen to live for biotic things and oxygen to function for abitoic things in the world. Example us, humans need water as energy ,hydration, and even growth and function the human body is 90% of water and I do not think we would be able to live with water for a long time. Also, the water cycle is the cycle of water which is from oceans, streams, and lakes to the sky to the clouds which forms into rain, hail, sleet, or snow and without those we wouldn't have natural disturbances which is bad for plants. Thus is the reason why I believe that water is the most important.

I think carbon is the most important. All living things contain some form of carbon. Carbon is used by all biotic factors to grow, live, and reproduce. Carbon is capable of forming many different bonds and compounds, which it makes it essential to the biotic and abiotic parts of the ecosystem. Abiotic factors are the non-living factors, which include water, sunlight, temperature, and oxygen. Living things use these abioitic factors to continue living, in the same way they use carbon. Carbon is used in non-living things like graphite, to make other things. Carbon also contains oxygen, which we use to breath and continue living.

    Water Cycle
The water cycle consists of many biotic and abiotic factors. The water cycle causes precipitation, which is an abiotic factor. Without the water cycle there would be no more precipitation which would harm ALL biotic factors. No water for plants so they die. When they die the herbivores become hungry and die, killing any omnivores and carnivores in the process. Which will eventually cause starvation for all organisms killing everything of.

The water consists of many biotic and abotic factors. Water cycle has many factors so that organisms and living things to stay healthy and stay alive. Water cycle has precipitation, evaporation, condensation that is the cycle of life and water when plants and animals receive all the factors and things that you need.

I think the water cycle is the most important cycle because it helps organisms stay alive. Without water we would not be able to travel in the ocean and play in the lake. Humans need water because we are made mostly of water and need it to survive. Plants need water produce photosynthesis which they give back is oxygen
