3872 MILES in 52 Days!!!!
As a "once in a lifetime" personal goal, I have committed to ride across our beautiful USA in 2015. My cycling adventure begins May 31st in San Francisco and ends July 21st in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I will be personally funding all expenses associated with the trip with all monies raised benefiting Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School.

As a young teenager growing up on a Midwestern dairy farm, I would have never imagined cycling across the USA. I was blessed to have loving parents who led by example and taught me the values of hard work and helping neighbors in need. Coming from this modest family upbringing, I funded all of my undergraduate college and graduate school education in the engineering and science fields. I am looking forward to committing my cross-country cycling challenge (3872 miles in 52 days) to Cristo Rey Atlanta with its academic and work study model mirroring real life experience and my own personal values.

Cristo Rey Atlanta is a Catholic learning community that educates young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose, and service. Cristo Rey Atlanta is a member of a network of 28 Cristo Rey schools around the country that empower young students to achieve their full potential. The school opened in Midtown Atlanta in July 2014 to 154 freshman and is providing a college preparatory education for some of the city’s and metropolitan Atlanta region's most underserved students. Unique to Cristo Rey schools is that all students work five full days a month in a corporate job through their innovative Corporate Work Study Program. Monies earned help fund 60% of their education.  The Cristo Rey model is unquestionably successful, where 100% of their graduates are accepted into college. The graduation rate for this demographic is 10%.

This is a special opportunity for me to “give back” and it is my privilege to ride in honor of these remarkable young people. I hope you will join me in my effort to support their academic journey, as I embark on mine.  My goal is to raise $30,000, the equivalent to six annual student scholarships, to be awarded to students who have indicated a desire to study and pursue career paths in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

I invite you to help me at whatever level you can and please know every donation is greatly appreciated by these worthy students and me!
Viva Cristo Rey!

Chapter 3, The Biosphere, Section 4: The Cycles of Matter

Matter is neither created nor destroyed. Matter moves through living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem in a continuous process called a cycle.  (Matter in an ecosystem may change form, but it never leaves the ecosystem.)

Select any ONE of the Cycles of Matter (Water, Carbon, Oxygen-Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphorus) and describe in 4-5 complete sentences or less why the cycle you picked is important to the abiotic and biotic parts of an ecosystem. You are welcome to include photos, images and diagrams or flow charts within your comment in addition to your statements.

(Blog assigned 9/25/14. All blog comments due by 7pm 10/2/14.) Please list your Name and House.

GREETINGS FROM MS. PECOT!

GREETINGS STUDENTS AND PARENTS!

My name is Ms. Pecot and I will be your child’s Biology teacher for the upcoming school year at Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School.

Science in general is a rigorous and demanding topic.  Our curriculum strictly follows a hands-on, student-focused and inquiry-based approach.  Upon completing each course, students will have acquired the necessary skills in order to be proficient in each topic area of  study.  The curriculum will include concepts such as biological evolution, the behavior of organisms, organization in living systems, the relationship of matter and energy and the interdependence of organisms.

Guidelines are described in more detail in the student syllabus, which your child was provided on the first day of school,

Please feel free to familiarize your child with my class room websites at

www.classjump.com/PecotCRA

Vocabulary Terms and Internet Access will be an important part of the learning process as your child proceeds this year.

As active teachers at Cristo Rey, we provide multiple field trip options, athletic organizations, mentor programs, tutorials and after school activities that your child may wish to pursue once introduced to the High School environment.

Please feel free to contact me at mpecot@cristreyatlanta.org for more information.

I am excited to have your student in my class room for the upcoming year and look forward to a year of success!

CROSS COUNTRY

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BRAVE STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN CROSS COUNTRY THIS SEASON!

Team Co-Captain: Sara Gebeyehu

Boy's Captain: Anthony Rustrian

Girl's Captain: Julia Sanchez

Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain.  The course, typically 4–12 kilometers (2.5–7.5 mi) long, may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. It is both an individual and a team sport; runners are judged on individual times and a points-scoring method for teams. Both men and women compete in cross country, which usually takes place during autumn and winter, and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.

Cross Country will compete in 2-3 meets during our first year which started late in the season at Piedmont Park beginning mid-October.
